U.S.–Kibera Boxing Club Partnership
Strengthening coaching, facilities, and competition pathways for youth in Kibera
Strengthening coaching, facilities, and competition pathways for youth in Kibera
This project builds a practical partnership between the Kibera Boxing Club in Nairobi and a growing circle of mainly U.S.-based trainers — with an anchor group in New York — to strengthen coaching quality, upgrade locally-built equipment, and support youth competition pathways over 12–18 months.
The Clubs needs align closely with what experienced U.S. trainers can realistically provide: a simple curriculum, coach development, technical guidance on equipment that can be built locally, and support to help talented kids access national competitions. Small external inputs translate into outsized impact because the Club already has consistent participation and proven results.
What the project delivers (4 sections):
A simple, professional training curriculum for ages 9–20
3–4 online coach-development modules
One annual in-person coaching clinic in Kibera
Guidance on coaching girls, injury prevention, and athlete management
Because imports are expensive and slow, the focus is on locally-made equipment using Kibera’s metalworkers, carpenters, and tailors:
Heavy bags + welded frames
Pull-up rigs, dip bars
Wooden benches and storage
Basic free weights
Straps (TRX-style)
Replacement gloves, mitts, wraps
A small, transparent travel fund to cover:
Transport
Accommodation
Registration fees
Competition kit
Target: 8–10 athletes per year, with girls included wherever possible.
Safe training times
Dedicated equipment
Clear rules on conduct and supervision
Specific curriculum modules on coaching girls
